No Curate appears in the parish of Kilmore from the Reformation until the end of the 18th century. Indeed a great many parishes throughout Ireland had to make do for most of this period with a single priest. With the great increase of population in Ireland from the middle of the 18th century on, the gradual non-enforcement of the Penal laws, the building of Catholic Churches and chapels and the opening of seminaries such as Carlow. Kilkenny and Maynooth, curates became both more widely required and more readily available from the turn of the 18th-19th centuries. They were sometimes employed however through a personal agreement with the P.P. or on a short-term basis (e.g. because of the parish priest's illness). It is not surprising therefore that in the early 19th century a parish which sometimes has a curate is at other times dependant on the parish priest alone.
We append below a list of the curates of the parish of Kilmore for nearly a century and a half. The years given in each case are for the most part those in which each priest's name appears in Kilmore in the Irish Catholic Directory and the reader must therefore allow for a lapse of a year in some cases before this publication would have caught up with clerical changes.
